Catalina Island, accessible by ferry off the coast, is known for its natural beauty and boating, with opportunities for sailing, kayaking, and motor boating. The island’s clear waters and picturesque harbors provide the perfect backdrop for a weekend or weeklong getaway from the busy coastal towns of Southern California.
The island's waters are home to the vibrant orange garibaldi fish, California's state marine fish. These bright orange fish are commonly seen in the island’s marine preserves, making snorkeling and diving particularly colorful experiences. The kelp forests and protected coves around Catalina provide excellent opportunities to observe these and many species up close. A popular way to see the marine life is taking glass-bottom boat tour.
History buffs and architecture enthusiasts will enjoy the Catalina Casino. The iconic landmark built in 1929, offers a glimpse into the island’s glamorous past. The casino, which never hosted gambling, houses a grand ballroom and a beautiful movie theater. Catalina tile is a celebrated style unique to the island and you will find murals with the tile embedded in buildings as well as shops offering it for sale or places where you can learn the craft from master ceramicists.
For outdoor lovers, Catalina's campgrounds such as Two Harbors and Black Jack Campground, off launching points for hiking. If you take a long enough hike, you just may encounter some of the Bison that are descendants of a small herd that were brought to the island in the 1920’s to make a movie.
A visit to Catalina wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the island’s homemade candy. Throughout the island you will find saltwater taffy, caramel apples, and fresh fudge.
