Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, near Florence, Oregon, has one the largest expanses of coastal sand dunes in North America stretching over 40 miles along the coast. Hiking trails wind through the dunes and surrounding forests. Dune buggy rides, kite flying, sandboarding and horseback riding are all ways to enjoy the dunes.

The historic Old Town district of Florence has small shops, art galleries, and a variety of seafood restaurants. The Siuslaw River Bridge, designed by Conde McCullough, provides a scenic entrance to the town. The Darlingtonia State Natural Site, dedicated to preserving a rare carnivorous plant species, offers an easy walk through a boggy area filled with these fascinating pitcher plants. The nearby Sea Lion Caves, one of the world's largest sea grottos, is home to a bustling colony of Steller sea lions. Florence's annual Rhododendron Festival, celebrates the blooming of the town’s vibrant rhododendrons with parades, flower shows, and a variety of family-friendly activities.

A visit to the Heceta Head Lighthouse, located just north of Florence, is a must. Perched on a dramatic bluff overlooking the ocean, this historic lighthouse, built in 1894, offers guided tours and panoramic views of the rugged coastline. The adjoining keeper’s house operates as a bed-and-breakfast, providing a unique lodging experience.
