Before I saw the truck I heard the jingle off in the distance. I knew the melody well. The Entertainer. Once in sight it was hard to miss. A brightly colored truck showcasing oversized images of ice cream in the foreground of our destination the Washington Mall. For a few minutes the Washington Monument took backstage to nostalgia. It was just what we needed on this hot day while on a long bike ride.
Repeat. Same bikes, same air although this time a different song. It was Pop goes the Weasel. This truck was purple. Waffle cones and sundaes. Greeting us on our exit from the Staten Island ferry to lower Manhattan.
Repeat. Different tune-Yankee Doodle. This truck, named Lickety Split propelled kids and adults to chase it down the street. It is always hard to decide except for the sprinkles. Joy. Downtown Chicago. Classic white standing out against the architecture. A welcome break from bike ride and play at Millennium Park.
Back in sunny California. Biking along the strand in Manhattan Beach. That familiar music once again.
