Most Los Angelenos head to the Sierras for their backpacking adventures and often forget that we have a great trail close by in the San Gabriel Mountains. The Gabrielino Trail, stretches 28.5 miles beginning at Chantry Flat in the Angeles National Forest and meanders through varied terrains before concluding at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena or the other way around depending on how you look at it. It provides an excellent opportunity for novice to practice a through hike and seasoned hikers to get a biodiversity fix.

The trail is sometimes exposed but also winds through forests of oak, pine, and sycamore, offering shade. Early sections of the trail follow the banks of the Santa Anita Creek, where the sound of flowing water can be heard. This part of the trail is particularly popular, with views of cascading waterfalls like Sturtevant Falls. As hikers progress, the landscape gradually transitions to more rugged and challenging terrain. The trail climbs through steep canyons and ridgelines, providing panoramic views of the San Gabriel Valley and beyond. On clear days, the vistas extend as far as the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands. The trail also passes through historical sites such as the old Roberts Camp and the ruins of the Echo Mountain Resort.

The ecosystems support a variety of animals, including mule deer, black bears, and numerous bird species. It's not uncommon to spot a red-tailed hawk soaring overhead to catch a snake or to hear the distinctive call of a California quail.

The Gabrielino Trail is well-maintained and marked, but hikers should be prepared for some strenuous sections and variable conditions. Bringing adequate water, snacks, and a good map is essential, as parts of the trail can be remote. There are several designated campsites along the trail for those looking to turn the hike into a multi-day adventure. Switzer Falls Campground and Spruce Grove Campground are popular choices, offer a are rustic overnight stopping spots.

Despite its proximity to Los Angeles, the Gabrielino Trail allows hikers to disconnect from city life and reconnect with nature for a few hours or a few days.
