Crater Lake National Park, located in southern Oregon, is known for its dynamic volcanic landscape. The lake was formed from the collapsed remains of the volcano, Mount Mazama, around 7,700 years ago. The lake is primarily fed by snow and rain and is the deepest lake in the United States. It is known for its vivid blue color and some of the clearest water ever recorded. The iconic Wizard Island, a cinder cone located within the lake is accessible during the summer by boat. The island allows hikers to explore its summit and see the lake’s vastness as an immersive experience.
The best way for visitors to explore the park by driving the 33-mile Rim Drive, which offers expansive views from various overlooks. Hiking trails leading to of the lake and the surrounding terrain offer spectacular vistas. fishing, swimming and winter sports including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, making it a year-round destination.
The historic Crater Lake Lodge, and the park’s visitor centers provide insights into the area’s natural history, volcanic origins, ecological features and cultural history. There are many Ranger Programs to engage in to learn even more.
